Hey Memphis!

It is crunch time. The time of crunch. The semester is to an end for all those students out there. (I should know. I am about to pull a few final papers and extra credit out of my hiney myself). Thanksgiving is abridge, and holiday preparations commence. Work load is appreciating for those who want their Christmas bonus. Or, maybe some of you have nothing going on. Lucky dogs. Either way, it is Friday, and time to have a little fun.

The Indie surfer vibeish band called Real Estate is actually performing at the Hi-tone here in good ol' Memphis, TN tonight! If I could label this in the most awkward way possible, I would call them Beachy Fall Chill Wave. Yep. Be there.

To me, Eliot Lipp's music always sounds like a video game that you should really be into right now. His beats seem to take me back to the 90s when I am playing Zelda and eating pop rocks. The sound blasts through you like a nostalgia that you can only dance out. Good stuff. He is performing at Newby's tonight. Also, be there. And try not to get lost in the album cover displayed in his video above like I did. I dare you.

Memphis hip hop is evolving in a good way.

When you think of the Bluff City, you think BBQ, Blues, Hustle and Flow, Memphis Beat ( horrible representation! ), Three Six Mafia and Juicy J. Memphis hip hop has traditionally been known to have a Southern Gangsta Rap theme to it, which does the job on a hot summer day down here. However, there is new face of Memphis coming forth. You can tell by the way our community is coming together. The youth is coming out with innovations and ideas. People are changing their habits. We are exercising and using green lines and doing hot yoga. Like normal cities do. More diverse music and shows and art are popping up all around. And hip hop is becoming more experimental and artistic. Positive messages are being enforced into music which is a new thing for us.

Here is a young lad that I had the pleasure of seeing live at the Grammy GPS concert at the Hi-tone a few months back. Gavin "Cities Aviv" is gaining attention in the underground hip hop community as well as the indie labels. He even had a positive review on Pitchfork, which is to say a lot. He was excellent live, and had every dirty hipster up in there bobbin' their heads. Check out his music here or in my earlier post.

Another young artist worth a listen is local hip hop artist Skewby. He is only 21 and has already accomplished artistic feats such as opening for the Lil' Wayne Farewell Tour and being dubbed as the "New Memphis" and a reviver of "real hip hop" in the words of blog Ill Roots. Here is a music video that pays an homage to Memphis and it's hip hop community. Represent!

Accidentally Saw an Awesome Live Show

Those are the best. Last night I took my sister and her boyfriend to go see some live music here in Memphis at the Hi-tone. Originally we were there to see my friend's band Oracle and the Mountain but unfortunately I didn't get off work in time to catch them in all their awesomeness. However, we didn't know much about the headliner but went ahead and paid the ten bucks to get in and blindly waded into the hipster-esque crowd that consumes the Hi-tone on a nightly basis. I love this venue and the loyal regulars who come stomp their feet here almost every night. Anyway, the headliner was a band called O'Death. I didn't know what to expect. In my mind I had a notion it was going to be punkish hardcore, but I really had no clue. The band sets up, and I see an insanely large drum set, a gigantic base drum, a violin and a banjo. Oh and a trumpet. That's all I need. It happened to be one of those accidental shows that didn't suck and exceeded my expectations. Here is one of the songs they played at Festival Del Dour. The energy is insane.
P.s. they had way more noise-making objects at the Hi-tone. Obviously they have grown up a little more since this video was made. If they ever come to your town, check it out!

Green Screening

During my internship at 'stache Media, I discovered many of wonderful things. Two of them were the band 1,2,3 and Green Screening. Green screening is a collaborative project in which the artists gets to record their music in front of a green screen studio-style and add their own touch to the way their music videos are made. The process is mostly improvised and very creative. Check out more videos on the Green Screening website.

Terrible Tuesdays

Pretty much music or videos that I should probably hate, but secretly love. This song is a popular love or hate example. Bring back Glam Metal!

First Post!

This is my first post! Yay! let me just introduce myself...to well, myself so far. Hopefully I will have a few followers. One day. Anyways for those of you accidentally reading this my name is Hana M. and I am 24 years old. I am from Memphis, TN. I will be blogging all things music, including other blogs I like, websites, random music I find, random music I am listening to, and etc. I will start this first post with a goodbye summer song. This band is called Discovery, which I always find myself listening to while rolling around in my car with the windows down on a breezy summer day. Enjoy!
